The Peck Patch is a living, ready-to-forage slab of freshly cut microgreen pea shoots, coir, compost and roots that will keep your girls happily busy for a day or two of natural pecking, scratching and shredding - and often pushes out a second small crop of green shoots along the way.

Why your chickens will love it

Chickens' single strongest natural behaviour is pecking and scratching through matted ground for food. In a fenced run with a feeder full of pellets, they lose most of the day's job. A Peck Patch gives them the job back.

How to use it

Drop the mat into your run, or onto a shallow tray inside the run to catch the coir and compost. Give it a light water each day and watch your girls go to work. They'll strip and scratch through most of it within a day or two of proper foraging, and any regrowth will keep them coming back for the rest of the week.

Once the greens are gone, any leftover coir and compost goes straight into the dust-bath area, the garden bed, or the compost heap.

Every Peck Patch is different - that's the point. Some come with more regrowth potential, some with denser roots, some with a small carpet of new green shoots already pushing through. What they all share:

• Coco coir and peat-free compost base - bound together by the pea root network into a coherent slab
