Nasturtium leaves for indoor birds - Empress of India
Bright, bold and packed with goodness, nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) is a favourite edible plant among bird keepers, and for good reason.
The leaves and stems are safe for parrots, budgies, cockatiels, lovebirds, finches and other companion birds. Their vivid green colour and peppery crunch spark natural curiosity, encouraging even cautious or seed-loving birds to try something new.
Nasturtium adds a useful nutritional boost alongside your bird’s regular diet. The leaves are a natural source of vitamin C, which supports immune function and tissue health, and beta carotene (a precursor to vitamin A), a nutrient many pet birds don’t get enough of.
Vitamin A deficiency is one of the most common nutritional problems in pet birds, especially those on seed-heavy diets, so nasturtium is a simple, natural way to add more variety and help top up levels. The plant also contains lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidants associated with eye health, and naturally occurring glucosinolates, the compounds that give it its peppery bite.
Clip it to the cage, weave it into toys or scatter it in a foraging tray to encourage natural foraging, shredding and exploring. It keeps your bird mentally stimulated and engaged with their food.
